Arthur Thomas Mudford Biography

Born 18 December 1885 in 40 Redfield Road, Midsomer Norton in the Midsomer Norton Sub District of the Clutton Registration District of Somerset. His father was Joseph Mudford, a labourer and his mother was Mary Jane Mudford formerly Mary Jane Hillier. His mother registered his birth on 25 January 1886.

In the 1911 Census Arthur T Mudford, aged 24, born in Radstock, Somerset was a Stoker 1st Class in the Royal Navy Barracks, Devenport (RG14PN13060 RD278 SD3 ED13 SN9999)

He cannot be found in the 1921 Census

He left home as a young man to join the Royal Navy. He signed on for a certain number of years and was assigned to HMS Revenge where he was an active member of the tug of war team plus the Stokers football team. He served through World War 1 and went through the Battle of Jutland. He eventually worked his way up to the rank of Leading Stoker.

The note on back of photograph of HMS Revenge above read:- "I have put a + but cannot see me very well. Be good love, sweet dreams. From one that is dieing for a nice kiss. XXXXXX "

On leaving the Navy on finishing his period of service, he moved to Barry to live with his brother Joseph William. He joined him at work in the Rank Flour Mill in Cadoxton at the docks. He soon moved on to become a coal trimmer at Barry Docks where he worked for a number of years until he suffered a bad accident and had to retire through ill health.

In the 1918/1918/1922 Electoral Registers he was living in 58 Main Street, Barry with his brother William Mutford and his wide Florrence Ann. They were lodgers with Thomas and Elizabeth McCord, Florence's parents.

Married his wife, Margaret Elizabeth Adlam Stone at Cardiff Register Office in the Counties of Cardiff & Glamorgan on 17th December 1921. He was aged 34 and she was aged 26. Both of them gave their address as 58 Main Street, Cadoxton. His occupation at the time was labourer at Flour Mill. His fathers details are given as Joseph William Mudford (deceased) a general labourer. Her fathers details are given as Albert Gabriel Stone, an ostler. The witnesses were Fred William Hinder and R. Hyde.

Had 3 sons, Arthur George Gabriel (born 2 June 1925), John William Francis (born 17 November 1929) and Gordon Thomas Hillier (born 22 April 1931)

In the 1939 Register the Mudford Household was in 8 Princes Street, Barry : Arthur T (Coal Trimmer) Margaret E A, and three closed records for Arthur, Gordon and John

Died on 02 April 1958 at Llandough Hospital, Penarth in the Sub District of Penarth in the registration district of East Glamorgan in the County of Glamorgan. He was 72 years old, a retired coal trimmer of 8 Princes Street, Barry. Cause of death was a) Haematemasis and b) Bleeding Gastric Ulcer. His son, Gordon Mudford of 8 Princes Street, Barry, registered the death. Laid to rest at Thornhill Crematorium, Llanishen, Cardiff at. 09.40am on 5 May 1958.

The funeral took place on Saturday of last week of Mr Arthur Thomas Mudford of 8 Princes Street, Barry, who died suddenly at Llandough Hospital on the previous Wednesday at the age of 72. A member of Cadoxton Conservative Club, Mr Mudford was a native of Midsomer Norton Somerset

Family mourners were: Mrs ME Mudford (widow); Mr A Mudford (son); Mr and Mrs J Mudford and Mr and Mrs G Mudford (sons and daughters in law); Mr and Mrs L Mudford (brother and sister in law); Mr E Stone (brother in law); Mr and Mrs C Yoxall, Mr B Fox, Mr and Mrs J. Loyns (nephews and nieces)

Also present were Mr and Mrs A Allen, Mr A Allen, Mr A James, Miss M Evans, Mr R Hartland, Mr J Marsh, Mr WL Morgan, Mr R Morgan, MR WV Morgan, Mr W Taylor, Mr B Coombes, Mr L Gerry, Mr RH Williams, Mr D Rees, Mr M Doughty, Mr D Sharp, Mr R Brabrook, Mr W Brabrook.

The bearers were Messrs Ted Brood, R Jessop, W Edwards, L Hanson, D Pitt and LT Davies (members of the Barry Plastics Club).

Funeral arrangements were by Arthur J Gay & Son. Cost of the funeral was 56 pounds 17 shillings and 6 pence.
