Rachel Lloyd Biography

Rachel Lloyd was born on the 24 May 1842 at Graigtrewddfa in the parish of Llangafelach, in the registration district of Llangafelach, Glamorgan. Her father was Evan Lloyd, a copperman, who registered the birth on July 2 1842. Her mother is given as Mary Lloyd formerly Rees.

Owen Bowen in the 1871 census was a lodger with a Thomas family, in Llangyfelach Road, Llangyfelach, Swansea. His place of birth was given as Pembrokshire.

Evan Lloyd was born 11 January 1873. No father's name was given on the birth certificate.

On 4 September 1873 in the Swansea District Register Office, Rachel Lloyd, spinster aged 29 of Graig, Morriston married Owen Bowen, bachelor aged 28 of Martin Street, Swansea. His father was Owen Bowen, a farmer and her father was Evan Lloyd (deceased) , a coppermann. The bride and groom both made their mark. The two witnesses were Thomas Lloyd and John Williams.

By 1881 she had had a daughter, Mary J Bowen and Owen Bowen had died in early 1875. Evan took the Bowen surname.

On 3 August 1881 in the Swansea District Register Office, Rachel Bowen, widow aged 37 of Graig, Trewyddfa, Llangyfelach, married Herbert Charles, a widower aged 40 of Graig, Trewyddfa, Llangyfelach. His father was John Charles (deceased) a copperman. Her father was Evan Lloyd (deceased) a copperman. Both bride and groom made their mark. The witnesses were Daniel Johns? and Mary Ann Rosser?

They had a son, John (Jack) Charles and his younger brother William. Evan was still using the Bowen name and was a tinplate worker like his half sister.
