Deep Duffryn Colliery
One of the first deep mines in this area, sinking work began here in 1850. Sunk to a depth of 403 yards by David Williams,
also known by his bardic name of Alaw Goch, Deep Duffryn was producing coal by 1855.It came under the ownership of Nixon, Taylor and Co. In 1857 the latest mining
equipment was installed including ventilating apparatus patented by Nixon. The output increased from 150 to 1,000 tons a day.
The original wooden headgear was replaced in 1888 with a lattice structure again designed by Nixon. From the 1896 Inspector of
Mines list, Nixon?s Navigation Coal Co. Ltd. owned it and there were a total of 1285 men employed here. During the 1970's, 514 men
were producing 160,000 tons of coal yearly from the Five Feet / Gelledeg seam. It closed on the 21st of September 1979.
