Penrhiwceiber Colliery

Penrhiwceiber Colliery, 1907

Known as Penrikyber the sinking began in 1872 by the Penrikyber Navigation Coal Company. The first coal was produced the in 1878, the shafts being 651 yards deep. From the Inspector of Mines list 1896 there were a total of 1463 men employed at this colliery. By 1908 the workforce had grown to 1,787. In 1945 there were 1,300 employed. In 1963/4 there was a ?1 million modernisation scheme including a re-organised loading and conveying underground. During the 1970's a workforce of 820 produce 250,000 tons yearly from the Lower Nine Feet and Seven Feet seams. Penrikyber closed on the 8th of October 1985.
