In 1898, Charles was listed as an Able Seaman working on the sail vessel Malfilatre, official number 67231, registered at the port of Bridgewater. In December 1913 he was registered as having a Merchant Seaman discharge in Cardiff. He was described as 5 foot 6, blue eyes, brown hair, fresh complexion and distinguishing marks of a dot on the back of both hands. Same again in Poplar March 1922, with a reference to the SS Dunvegan Casle, an Merchant ship scrapped in 1923, after service as a post ship and an armed merchant vessel in WWI.
